Russell and his team at Heritage Roofing Southwest were an absolute dream to work with. Honest, passionate, skilled professionals. Polite and respectful and superb communication. Russell listened to my ideas and concerns and nothing was ever an issue. We are so proud of giving this old house the treatment it deserves. A former Mill worker cottage, a small piece of history in Ivybridge old town.
I've waited a couple of years to post this review because I wanted to live with the work we had done, and share our damp house journey. Our 1864 granite and slate (and red brick front/back) built house is no longer damp, not since we worked with Russell and his team, taking his professional advice on the work needed to resolve the damp issue in the solid stone 60cm deep gable end wall.
We had old cracked render repaired back in 2007, advised by 'Heritage Preservation' to line the exposed interior stone and lime mortar walls, with a concrete treatment. Plus they insisted we have air vents installed on a solid gable end wall, at ground level, not above. Naively , we trusted their advice and carried out the work. We had just bought our first house and it was a bit of a wreck. Terrible advice! That company clearly don't understand old houses and water ingress, despite their company name!! Shameful.
Years later, water was in behind the render and became trapped inside the wall due to the concrete treatment. The walls couldn't breathe. Our plastered walls grew mould and blew patches which we are only sorting with the confidence that Russell's work has fixed the damp and our now beautiful exposed stonework, repointed with lime is breathing and fully dried out.
Not only has taking the render off the bottom sorted the damp, the cladding of the upper floor in wood and reclaimed slate has thermal properties, keeping heat out and warmth in summer/winter. And look how beautiful it is!!
Every single day I look at our house and smile. The sun detailing facing west, and the patchwork of greens, greys and pale pinks glow in the sun make it so pretty. I know it's happy again, watertight, and more beautiful than it has even been in the past 161 years.
Thank you Russell. Truly. We are forever grateful to you and your team for the passion, skill and dedication to the beautiful work you put into our little home.

Russell and his team were a joy to have working on our home. The finished bay windows and vertical tiling were completed to a very high standard. Clean site each day and a would not hesitate to recommend Heritage Roofing to anyone. Professional and polite throughout.

Don’t be fooled by the name. If you own a listed building or any kind of heritage asset, this business should be on your speed dial, for roofing or literally anything else.
We contacted them about a leaking window in a stone built barn conversion. Russell provided expert advice about potential solutions, and several recommendations. In the end we decided to try scraping out the terrible job done by the original builders around the window, installing a new lintel and repointing the entire wall with lime mortar.
The work was carried out to an exceptionally high standard, and looks fantastic. During the work the team identified several issues that were clearly contributing to the problem, and fixed them promptly and to an equally high standard. We were kept fully informed throughout the work. The cost was incredibly reasonable for the amount of hours put in, and the team were polite, friendly and a pleasure to have around. The finished work looks fantastic and (touch wood) seems to have solved the problem.
I’m already making a list of all the other work I’d love to have done, and frankly I don’t think I’ll ever let anyone else touch so much as a downspout here as long as Russell and his team are in business.

We asked Russell for advice on the roof of our Victorian house, which we are renovating. He made a site visit, was very generous with his time, giving useful information on the stone walls as well as the roof. He produced a written report including a scheme of work and has promptly and comprehensively answered all our follow up questions. Many thanks, Russell!

Heritage Roofing Southwest really helped me. My fixed rooflight shattered and I was looking to replace it with an opening window, instead, and was getting ready to order the new window when Russ came on board. He was the only person to check the weight of the window and it turned out that I would need extensive roof work to support the much heavier window. Because of his input, I was able to make a clear and much better choice to have the window replaced as original, so saving me from a very expensive, time consuming and stressful operation.
So I was immediately very grateful.
The company who made the window fitted it, but were not qualified to fix the lead flashings and replace slate tiles. Even though it was such a small job, Heritage Roofing Southwest kindly made time, on a Sunday, to come and check the window and fix everything properly so I could rest assured, with complete peace of mind, that it would all be leak free.
Russ is patiently passing on his expert, valuable knowledge to a young apprentice and we all had fun as I watched Russ teaching and the young one learning. Russ told me it was the perfect size job for this so I was happy, and the whole experience was a pleasure.
